Importance of controlling intake of Omega3's and Omega6's to achieve benefits.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the importance of getting the right balance between omega-3 fatty acids and their cousins, the omega-6’s. In the past few decades, the American diet has shown a dramatic increase in the consumption of omega-6’s, with omega-3’s consumed at a much lower rate. Why is this important, you ask? Some researchers believe that having too much of one can interfere with the actions of the other kind, reducing the beneficial effects of both. For example, the omega-3’s you consumed with your fish at dinner may not be as effective lowering your cholesterol if your overall diet is higher in omega-6 fats. Can flaxseed help with this? You bet! The extraordinarily high omega-3 content in flaxseed gives you an immediate boost, providing you with a better ratio of omega-3’s to omega-6’s and improving the efficiency with which your body can use both! Finding the proper balance can be alittle tricky and the National Institute of Health has made available a "free" computer program that will aid in the balancing act. The US NIH has produced a good software package which uses the USDA SR13 database to calc your Omega 6 : 3 long chain membrane ratios.
